A few weeks ago while taking the public transit home, an advertisement on a bus shelter caught my eye. Not because it was particularly well designed or that it sported a pretty girl, but sadly because of its very obvious use of helvetica. I have a love affair with helvetica. The ad was for the new MTV Canada and listed the channels it was accessible on each television service provider. I made a mental note.
Soon enough, the frequency of me checking what is on this new channel increased. I was mildly amused by such ridiculous programs like “Date My Mom” and another program which I can’t recall the name of where a guy or a girl would have to pick between three candidates, solely based on the condition of their rooms. A program called MTV:Live, a handful of interesting hosts talking about interesting issues to interesting experts in a room full of interested audience members, was unfortunately not very interesting. I happened to catch one that had Russell Peters, of internet-comedian fame, as a guest. This one was funny, because he was so patronizing to the hosts but quickly grew stale following the 15th re-airing.
I must admit that there is one program that was worth following. In the early stages of my relationship with MTV Canada, I caught half an episode of a reality show that followed high school kids around a beach in Laguna, California. No doubt my efforts to build suspense has already been negated by the opening image.
